Tajikistan’s Fallen Hero: Alisher Kimatshoev

In May and June 2022, there were deadly outcomes after President Emomali Rahmon’s regime quelled the scene of protests in Badakhshan Mountainous Autonomous Region (GBAO), Tajikistan. It is the largest region in Tajikistan in terms of area, but the least populated in terms of population.

According to his relatives, Alisher was “funny and harmless”. He was a driver and had a modest life and carrying passengers along on the Dushanbe-Pamir roads. In the spring, he engaged himself with the gardening.

Relatives of Alisher Kimatshoev said that he was taken away from his home on May 18. He was arrested in his home, in front of his 9-year-old son.

His son was reported to have narrated the incident, “They entered the house with a machine gun and took my father and left. Grandma and I also went out. They also took our neighbour out of his house and laid him on his stomach on the sand and tied his hands. Grandma asked the men, where are you going and why? My father said to us, go back to the house quickly. We entered the house and looked through the window until they disappeared. They were taken to the police station.”

Alisher´s wife worked in a hospital. On May 18, due to an accident that happened, they were not dismissed from work. She was needed at work and was not at home on the day of her husband’s arrest.

According to the relatives, Alisher’s body was found together with other bodies in the garage of the hospital.

Alisher was reported died at the age of 47.

The authorities in Khorug have given no explanation of the circumstances of these unjustified gruesome killings. The perpetrators remain at large.
