Hitachi Energy has secured over €2bn in contracts with German transmission system operator Amprion to supply four converter stations for two HVDC links. The contracts follow a 2023 agreement in which Hitachi was chosen as the preferred supplier for stations in Heide, Wilhelmshaven, Polsum, and Hamm.
The HVDC links, V48 and V49, are part of Korridor B, a transmission system that will carry clean energy from wind farms in northern Germany to industrial centers in the west. This project is crucial for replacing traditional power generation with renewable energy.
Hendrik Neumann, Amprion’s CTO, emphasized that Korridor B will enhance energy security for both Germany and Europe. It is expected to supply green electricity to millions in North Rhine-Westphalia by the early 2030s.
Niklas Persson of Hitachi Energy highlighted that the project is vital for Germany’s decarbonization. The grid capacity to transfer wind energy from the north is necessary for the country to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
The Korridor B project involves two underground cable connections with converter stations, linking the North Sea coast to the Ruhr region. Hitachi Energy will also offer long-term services, with the converter stations slated to begin operation in 2030.
